Alsha-Baylee Salers stud has once again entered the Gate 2 Plate Feedlot competition and have come out winners, claiming 2 prizes with one of their animals.
They took out the prize for- Individual heifer with highest points – 71A – 112.902 points and Heifer with the best feed lot performance – 71A – 49.613 points
Alan excitedly proclaimed earlier last month “This heifer scored 112.902 points and the champion steer did 100.371 points so she beat them all so we more than backed up on last year”.
Last year Alsha–Baylee won the award for – Best feed lot steer performance. Plus they also had a Murray Grey / Salers heifer come in second in the heifer competition and was the only animal in the competition to score a 50 out of 50 for processing.
Alan continues “along with major winners this year BA & RN Ravenhill, we were the only ones from placings last year to achieve a better result.”
This photo was taken the day the animals left the farm to go into the feedlot. The first crosses are aged 9 months (all grey) and the second cross heifers are 8 months (one grey and two red).
The Gate 2 Plate Challenge is a competition for beef producers which assesses cattle performance through the grainfed, MSA graded, domestic supply chain in Western Australia.
The competition aims to reflect as closely as possible the real life situation of cattle entering the grainfed, MSA graded, domestic supply chain and reward those animals that not only meet requirements for carcase quality but are also profitable at each stage.
Cattle breeders are able to compare the performance of their own cattle against others on a level playing field and assess the suitability of their breeding for the intended market.
Cattle receive points for only objective, measurable performance traits which are important for profitability at each stage of the supply chain.
The winning team or individual animal is the one which is most profitable through the supply chain. The competition starts in January and cattle are fed for 75 days for heifers and 84 for steers before being processed at Harvey Beef where the carcasses are MSA graded.
This heifer achieved awards for – Individual heifer with highest points and Heifer with the best feed lot performance. She is a Salers/ Murray Grey back to Salers from Alsha-Baylee’s home grown genetics.
This photo was taken the day she was leaving home to go and further the “Salers” breeds ability to kick butt against the other major breeds that were represented in the competition. She also achieved the most profitable animal of all on feedlot not just heifers.
