Mr Frank Hill a long time Salers breeder who began breeding Salers back in 1993 and has run a breeding herd of up to 550 females before having to reduce his herd to about 400 females due to recent dry seasons.
Frank went to France last year to buy Salers Genetics as he believes the Salers breed are “bigger and better feed converters than similar cattle elsewhere”. Whilst there he met many interesting and very hospitable people (who he is still in contact with today) and was able to see 12 Salers herds while touring.
He tells me one herd in particular has a very different claim to fame. The story goes that in 2005 when the Tour De France went through the area of Cussac a group of Salers cows got out of their paddock and caused a road obstruction during the race. Frank tells me “There is a rumor that a young French rider skipped the Peloton and got away from Lance Armstrong,” due to the cows “giving the young Frenchman a great advantage”. Now the cow pictured is a daughter of the ring leader of escapees. Unfortunately “The cow passed away last year” said Frank. These “dairy Salers cow are bred to produce Cantal Fromage from Salers milk” explains Frank
Charlotte Salat (pictured), her father and Uncle own the dairy from which the cows escaped. Charlotte is pictured with “the best cheese (Cantal Fromage) anyone can buy” says Frank. More pictures of Frank’s amazing trip to follow soon.
