Salers youth had a very big year during the 2017 show season in SA and Western Victoria.

Breeders group class at Casterton show – Handlers Rachel, Cameron and Emily (L-R)

Three young Salers enthusiasts competed in 6 shows either handling Salers cattle or other breeds for different studs, competing in junior/senior beef handlers competitions, junior/senior beef cattle judging competitions, dairy handlers and dairy judging competitions.  To add to this impressive skill set they also competed in a sheep judging competition and at one show a member of this group was given the privilege of being the associate judge.

Let’s see what they have achieved.

Rachel Curtis during the show season handled stock for 3 different studs at various shows.  She competed in several junior handler competitions and was placed 2nd at Mil lel and 3rd at Millicent show. Several shows ran junior judging competitions where she gained experience in public speaking.

Emily McKinnon joined Cara Park Salers again this year as an extra handler at several shows and did an awesome job.  She competed in several of the handler competitions gaining experience and confidence.  She then went on at the Mt Gambier show to place 2nd in the Senior Beef cattle judging competition and later in the day was placed 1st in the sheep judging completion.

Cameron Curtis was rather busy handling for 5 different studs, competing in the beef cattle handler competitions and winning placings at a number of them.  At the Mt Gambier show he competed in the senior dairy handlers section for the first time where he was placed 2nd and was later asked to help a dairy exhibitor with their group classes.  The highlight of Cameron’s show season was when he was asked to be the associate judge at the Mt Gambier show where he was paired with Ben Hill from Queensland.
